"How often should I get my car detailed?" has a different answer in Ontario than in most places, because for about five months of the year the roads are covered in salt. Here is the schedule we recommend to customers at our Mississauga studio, season by season, and how to adjust it for the way you drive.
The short answer
- Full detail, inside and out: twice a year, in the fall before the salt and in the spring once it is gone.
- Wash: every two weeks, including through the winter whenever it is above freezing.
- Interior clean: once in summer, or every two to three months if the car carries kids, pets or work gear.
- Paint protection: wax every month or two, a sealant every three to six months, or a ceramic coating installed once and maintained for years.
Why Ontario needs its own schedule
Four things set the calendar here: road salt from roughly November to April, pollen and tree sap in spring, bugs, bird droppings and strong sun in summer, and months of closed windows in winter, when everything that comes into the cabin stays there. A schedule built around those seasons does more for the car than detailing on a fixed interval.
Fall (October and November): the most important detail of the year
If you only detail once a year, do it now. A fall detail takes the summer grime and bonded contamination off the paint, then seals it with wax, sealant or a ceramic coating so salt rinses off instead of bonding. Inside, it clears summer sand out of the carpet and conditions leather before the heater dries it out. It is also the time to fit custom floor mats with raised edges, before the first slush comes in on your boots. Our road salt checklist has the full list.
Winter (December to March): rinse, do not scrub
- Rinse the car every two weeks when it is above freezing, including the wheel wells and the bottoms of the doors.
- Use a touchless wash or a hand rinse. Brush washes drag the grit from the car before yours across your paint.
- Tip the floor mats out every week and deal with salt lines on the carpet before they soak into the padding.
- If the interior is bad by February, a mid-winter interior clean with hot extraction takes the salt out of the carpets.
Spring (April and May): undo the winter
Once the salt is off the roads, book a full detail. The outside needs a decontamination wash to remove bonded iron and salt film, a thorough rinse of the wheel wells and underside, and fresh protection. Inside, salt stains come out of the carpets with hot extraction and a salt remover. It is also the moment to check the paint for chips from the winter, which should be touched up before they rust.
Summer (June to September): maintain and protect
Summer is about keeping up. Wash every two weeks, and take bird droppings, bug remains and tree sap off within a few days, because they etch the clear coat faster in the heat. Protect the dashboard and leather from the sun. An interior clean mid-summer keeps the car on track, especially a family car or anything that has been to the cottage or the beach.
How often, by the way you drive
- Highway commuter: full detail twice a year, a wash every one to two weeks, and film on the front end. Our guide on whether PPF is worth it explains why.
- Family car or pets: full detail twice a year plus an interior clean every two to three months. Pet hair and crumbs work into carpet fibres faster than most people expect.
- Leased car: the same twice-yearly schedule, plus a detail before the return inspection.
- Weekend or summer car: a full detail before it goes into storage, and a wash after each drive.
- Work truck or rideshare: an interior clean every month, and a full detail each spring and fall.
Which package, when
We offer three car detailing packages in Mississauga, and they line up with the calendar:
- Basic, a maintenance clean: a thorough wash, vacuum and wipe-down in two to four hours. Good for summer and between seasons.
- Advanced, a deep clean: adds seat and carpet shampoo, leather conditioning and a decontamination wash outside. The usual choice in spring.
- Premium, complete care: the full reset with steam cleaning, extraction, odour treatment, engine bay and a sealant or wax, in four to six hours. The one to book in the fall.
Every quote lists exactly what the package includes for your vehicle, so there are no surprises on the day.
How a ceramic coating changes the schedule
A coated car still needs washing, but each wash is quicker and easier. Dirt and salt release with a rinse, water sheets off, and the paint stays glossy between details, so most coated cars only need the spring and fall visits plus regular hand washes. The coating also replaces the wax and sealant step for years. Our guide to how long ceramic coating lasts in Ontario has the numbers.
Signs your car needs a detail now
- Water sits flat on the paint instead of beading.
- The paint feels rough when you slide your hand across it inside a thin plastic bag. That is bonded contamination.
- White salt lines on the carpet or mats.
- A musty or stale smell when the heat or air conditioning comes on.
- A haze on the inside of the windshield that comes back right after you wipe it.
Our detailing is done in the studio on Atlantic Drive in Mississauga, where we have the lighting, extraction equipment and room to dry the car properly. You can wait, or drop the car off and collect it later the same day. See the packages and book a detail.
