The inside of a car takes more punishment than most people notice. Coffee, crumbs, sand from the summer, and in Ontario, months of slush and road salt walked in on boots. A quick vacuum at the car wash picks up what is on top. Interior detailing goes after everything underneath. Here is what a proper interior detail includes, how long it takes, what it can and cannot fix, and how to keep the cabin clean between visits.
The short answer
- What it is: a top-to-bottom clean of the whole cabin, including the parts a quick vacuum never reaches.
- What is included: a full vacuum, every hard surface and vent cleaned, carpets and fabric seats shampooed, leather cleaned and conditioned, and the glass cleaned inside.
- How long it takes: at our studio, two to four hours for a basic detail and four to six for an advanced or premium detail.
- How often: for most Ontario drivers, before winter and again in spring once the salt is gone.
- Is it worth it? Yes if the carpet has salt lines, the seats are stained, or there is a smell that keeps coming back. A vacuum will not fix any of those.
Interior detailing vs a car wash vacuum
A car wash vacuum takes loose dirt off the surface of the carpet and mats. It does not touch what has soaked into the seat fabric and carpet padding, the film on the dash and screens, the grime in the vents and seams, or the sand packed into the seat rails. That is where stains and smells live. An interior detail cleans all of it, and it takes hours rather than minutes because most of the work is by hand with brushes, extractors and the right cleaner for each surface.
What a proper interior detail includes
A good detailer works from the top down, so dust and dirt fall onto areas that have not been cleaned yet:
- Clear out and inspect. Mats come out, loose items are cleared, and stains, spills, damage and damp patches are noted before anything gets wet.
- Full vacuum. Seats, carpet, mats and trunk, then under and between the seats, along the seat rails and into the seams with crevice tools and brushes.
- Hard surfaces. Dash, console, door panels, cup holders and vents are cleaned with an interior cleaner, soft brushes and microfibre, so grime comes out of the textures and seams instead of being smeared around.
- Screens and gloss trim. Touchscreens and piano black trim scratch easily, so they get a soft microfibre and a screen-safe cleaner, never ammonia-based glass cleaner.
- Carpets and fabric seats. Shampooed with hot water extraction: the cleaner goes in and the dirty water is pulled back out, along with what has soaked into the fibres and padding.
- Leather. Cleaned with a leather cleaner and a soft brush, then conditioned so it does not dry out and crack.
- Headliner. Spot cleaned gently. Too much moisture can loosen the glue that holds it up.
- Glass and finishing. The inside of every window and mirror is cleaned, the door jambs are wiped down, and the mats go back in clean.
Our packages, from refresh to full reset
Every car comes in with different needs, so we offer three levels. Each quote lists exactly what is included for your vehicle.
- Basic: a thorough wash, vacuum and wipe-down, in two to four hours. Right for a car that is kept fairly clean and needs a proper refresh.
- Advanced: adds seat and carpet shampoo, leather conditioning and a decontamination wash outside. Right for stained seats, salt-marked carpet or a family car.
- Premium: the full reset with steam cleaning, extraction, odour treatment, the engine bay and a sealant or wax, in four to six hours. Right for a car you are selling, a car you have just bought, or one that has had a hard year.
Add-ons such as odour removal, ozone treatment and headlight restoration can go on any package. The full list is on our car detailing page.
Winter salt and the Ontario interior
In Ontario the interior takes its worst hit between December and March. Slush and salt come in on every pair of boots, soak into the carpet, and dry into white salt lines that a vacuum cannot lift. Salt lines come out with hot water extraction and a dedicated salt remover, and the carpet is dried before the car goes home. To stop them coming back, take the carpet mats out for the winter and use mats that hold the slush. Our floor mats guide and road salt checklist cover what to do before the snow arrives.
What interior detailing can and cannot fix
Detailing removes dirt, stains, salt and smells. It cannot undo physical damage. Burns, tears and worn leather, fabric that has faded in the sun, and some old stains that have set into the fibres can be improved but not always removed completely. A good detailer looks first and tells you what to expect before starting, rather than promising a result the material cannot give.
How long does interior detailing take?
At our studio a basic detail takes two to four hours, and an advanced or premium detail four to six hours, depending on the size of the vehicle and its condition. Shampooed seats and carpets are dried before handover but can feel cool for a few hours, so crack the windows on the first drive home. You are welcome to wait, or drop the car off and collect it later the same day.
Keeping it clean between details
- Little and often. Clear out trash and vacuum every couple of weeks, including under the mats.
- Hard surfaces. Consumer Reports suggests a microfibre cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol for the screen and other hard surfaces, and warns that ammonia-based glass cleaners can damage a screen's anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coatings.
- Leather. Vacuum the crumbs out of the seams first, then wipe with a damp cloth and a leather cleaner, and finish with a conditioner so it does not dry out.
- Avoid harsh chemicals. Household cleaners can damage interior surfaces, and Consumer Reports warns that bleach and hydrogen peroxide can damage upholstery.
- Deal with spills straight away. Blot, do not rub, and get milk or coffee out of the carpet before it soaks into the padding.
How often should you detail the interior?
For a daily driver in Ontario, a full interior detail before winter and another in spring once the salt is gone keeps the cabin in good shape, with a basic detail in between if the car works hard. Families, pet owners and rideshare drivers usually need it more often. Our season-by-season detailing schedule has the full calendar.
What it costs
The price depends on the size of the vehicle, its condition and the package you choose, plus any add-ons. We look at the car, explain what it needs and confirm the cost before we start. See our detailing packages or book a detail at our studio on Atlantic Drive in Mississauga.
